The letter: Jean de Chourses, sieur de Malicorne, governor of Poitou, to Henri III, “A Nyort ce xxie avril 1586”, signed Malycorne: six pages mostly in cipher.
Where: Bibliothèque nationale de France, fr. 15572 ff. 162–164 (Gallica views 169–173). Not in DECODE or the catalogue.
The cipher: Invented signs and digits, several for each letter, with signs for de, la, le, que, sur, nous, et and for doubled letters, and nulls. Thirteen look-alike signs still carry two values.
How it was deciphered: Michael Brackx applied Tomokiyo's key table, corrected it, and checked the decode against the decipherment written in the margin of f. 163r at the time.
What it says: The rest “consiste en la creance du porteur et lesdicts articles”; two plots on Lusignan were discovered; Villeluisant's men cut two companies to pieces near Sanxay.
Still open: f. 162r, the second stretch of f. 163r and the four later pages give phrases between gaps; no other letter in this key has a decipherment to check them against.

01 The letter

f. 162r has four clear lines and 27 cipher lines; f. 162v 31 cipher lines; f. 163r is clear text with two cipher stretches (A, two lines; B, nine), both deciphered in the margin by a hand of the time; canvas 171 carries two clear letters with cipher blocks of 4 and 16 lines; canvas 172 has 31 and 24 cipher lines, then the clear close and the signature. The address leaf, “Au Roy”, is view 173.

02 f. 163r and its margin

Stretch A reads as one sentence, confirmed word for word by the margin (consiste en la creance du port[eu]r, & les articles); 73% of its words read as sense, the opening group and one word before porteur unread:

Stretch B gives phrases between gaps (69%): les deulx entreprises que i'auois sur Lusignan, l'une … tramee aux charbonnieres, … donnant quelque argent … descouuertes, et fault que ie … ce peult aisement establir la charge en ce pais. The margin beside it is mostly illegible between argent and descouvertes.

03 f. 162r, decoded

The decode builds phrases, not sentences (62% of words read as sense, 65 holes): the failed enterprises against Lusignan, “le sieur de Uilleluisant et ceulx que ie … enuoies”, an attack in the bourg of Sanxay a league from Lusignan on two companies, “les taill[e]rent en piesses, prinrent les … capitaines … et l[e]urs enseignes … les amenerent ici”, with no loss but “l'enseigne du capit[a]ine Cossart et trois [?soldats]”. Most holes are letter strings that are not French, which points to look-alike signs still merged under one label rather than to a wrong key.

04 f. 162v and views 171–172, decoded

Brackx then sent aligned decodes and readings of the other four pages, with a legend tying each sign label to its shape. Measured on his readings: f. 162v 63% of words read as sense, view 171 67%, view 172 left 57%, view 172 right 79%. Fewer than 1% of the letters rest on a hand-chosen value. None of these pages has a decipherment in the margin, and sentences build only between holes: on f. 162v, [?Laval] a pris ung tel deplaisir et ennui de ce que ses deulx freres furent tues a Sainctes, et l'en est demeure mallade … et en est mort de samedi dernier; on view 172 right, soldiers with intelligences with the enemy and the companies still to come; on view 171, ladders de [?bois] et de corde to surprise a town on an intelligence.

He also checked the labels that seemed to merge two signs, on tiles cut from the full-size images after straightening each block. The barred £ is always m, but the looped ℒ stands for both b and m. The barred £ for m and n, the f with a bar, the hooked y and the crossed p (h or s) each turn out to be one sign with two values, so none of these can be settled by shape.

05 How it was done

Key. Tomokiyo's table, corrected: the hooked y is s (14 of 14 tokens; his table's t is probably a slip), the curly y p, the looped ꝺ n, 10 i, ρ p and h, and new word signs for nous and et. Three per-page keys were merged and pruned one value at a time, from 43 to 13 two-valued signs.
Against the margin. Stretch A 97.6% of the margin's letters matched in order, against 22–27% for shuffled keys; B lines 1–3 83.3%. For B lines 4–14 the first posted figure (72.8%) could not be reproduced; restated on the legible margin words against cipher rows 4–8 it is 79.3%, against 15–24%.
Departures from the raw decode. Six readings were chosen by hand on two-valued signs (Lusignan, ceulx, ici, Cossart, tramee, ce: 7 letters, under 1% of each page's letters) and three words of f. 163r B are taken from the margin where the decode is a letter or more off (i'auois, charbonnieres, descouuertes).
Language model. Corrected to Montaigne's Essais I–III after an Italian and a Middle English text were found in the first one: coverage 72.3% (76.5% as first posted), shuffled keys 32.5–47.7%.

06 What remains

f. 162v and views 171–172: phrases between gaps, 57–79% of words; without a contemporary decipherment of these pages or of another letter in this key, the two-valued signs cannot be settled.
