Tomokiyo's League polyphonic cipher (mayenne.htm) is the key; f. 188 (mostly clear, cipher on the verso) is the original of the deciphered f. 184-185, and f. 176 of f. 177. f. 186 is a clear letter with c. 58 lines of cipher passages, f. 189 one page wholly in cipher (33 lines): c. 5,000 polyphonic glyphs. A classifier trained on the 1,100 aligned glyphs of f. 188v reads 75-79 % of held-out glyphs, hand reading c. 70 %; the polyphonic decoder needs over 90 %, and no verbatim crib from f. 185 occurs in f. 189 or f. 186v (local-alignment search against a shuffled control). fr. 3985 no. 7 not examined.

Why it matters. Written in the week of Henri IV's abjuration (25 Jul 1593) and the truce of Suresnes.

Status and prior art. Plaintext known, 18 Sept 2026 (breves1603/): the original key is BnF fr. 3462 f. 103 (Gallica btv1b9058227h canvas 109). fr. 3541 (anc. Béthune 9021) holds twelve ciphered letters of 1603 (ff. 60-104). Berger de Xivrey, Lettres missives VI (1853), printed from a contemporary clear copy (Monmerqué ms 'Lettres à l'ambassadeur du Levant'): full text of 18 Feb (f. 60), 31 Mar (f. 63, not 1 Mar) and 17 Apr (f. 66), summaries of the nine others. Tomokiyo's partial f. 60 reading was corrected against it. The ciphertext itself is not digitised, so the letter-by-letter check of the nine summarised letters is blocked on BnF images. A second clear copy of all twelve is BnF fr. 4029 (register of 158 letters of Henri IV to Brèves, 1592-1608), nos. 131-142 on ff. 118-128, also not digitised: a reproduction of those folios gives the nine summarised letters in full with no decipherment. Brèves's own fr. 15578 f. 185 (Gallica btv1b9064568h canvas 196) is in the same cipher with an interlinear decipherment, for checking the key's signs.

Why it matters. The Ottoman disorder of 1603 and the renewal of the Capitulations (1604).
