- The letters
- Six records of the Keresdi Bethlen papers, 1645–1648: numbered points for Bethlen's Warsaw mission (1645), a letter to the Hofmeister (1646), a clear letter with three cipher spans (1647), and three of 1648, two of them from Zsigmond Rákóczi and one from the Rákóczi brothers to Bethlen and Andrew Klobusiczky, envoys to the Polish diet.
- Where
- Romanian National Archives, Cluj (not Sibiu), Keresdi Bethlen 14–15; DECODE R4936–R4940 and R4942, all listed N/A with no decryption.
- The cipher
- Letter-for-letter substitution of Hungarian, written without word breaks, in reciprocal pairs (c = p, g = u, q = t ...). R4939 uses a second paired alphabet in another hand.
- How it was deciphered
- The family alphabet was found by annealing against a Hungarian quadgram model on R4936 (23 Sept 2026) and applied unchanged to the others; R4939 was broken the same way from its own 1,631 letters (23 Oct 2026). A blind second transcription of six R4939 lines agrees on 93.9% of letters.
- What it says
- Hiring musketeers and dragoons in Poland (1645), distrust of the Emperor's diploma for the Protestants (1646), and in 1648 the Polish crown: the brothers write that their father, György I Rákóczi, is dying and bind the envoys to push Zsigmond's candidacy.
- Still open
- R4936 (1,956 letters) decodes but 6.7% of its letters sit on g/q look-alikes the scan cannot separate; R4938's three spans are fragments; about twelve words of R4939 and two runs of R4937 are illegible. R4939 is to become a target of its own.

01 The records
DECODE holds ten cipher records from two Transylvanian collections in Cluj under R4933–R4942. They were first grouped by number and split by cipher on 14 Oct 2026: R4941 is a different substitution (r4941) and R4933–R4935 are the Kemény collection of 1628 (kemeny1628). This page covers the six from Keresdi Bethlen 14–15:
- R4936 (Keresdi Bethlen 14, 1645): numbered points in the prince's “we” for Bethlen's mission to Warsaw, both pages almost wholly in cipher. Decoded, not counted (see section 04).
- R4937 (15-01, 1646): one long page to “edes Hokmester”, sender not named. Deciphered.
- R4938 (15-02, 24 Apr 1647): a clear letter with three short cipher spans, 54 letters. Decoded in fragments.
- R4939 (15-03, 1648): two pages of cipher in another hand, addressed in clear to “Magnificis Francisco Betthlen de Keresd ... ac Andreae Klobusiczki ... ad moderna comitia Reipub. Poloniae legatis”. Deciphered in its own alphabet.
- R4940 (15-04, Munkács, 2 Aug 1648): Zsigmond Rákóczi to Bethlen, clear with two cipher spans of 23 letters. Deciphered.
- R4942 (15-06, 1648): Zsigmond Rákóczi, a cipher block of 252 letters; DECODE's image 3 is a clear slip of the same block in his name. Deciphered.
No decipherment of any of them was found in print: Lukinich's edition of Bethlen's correspondence (1907) and his biography (1908), Szilágyi's documents on the peace of Linz (1885) and Erdély és az északkeleti háború I were searched; the last prints the envoys' reports of October 1648, not these letters.
02 The family alphabet
The writers spell Hungarian letter by letter in a substitution whose letters are swapped in pairs, so that the same table enciphers and deciphers: c and p, g and u, q and t, among others (shared-key-hypothesis.json in the folder). A first statistical key on R4936 had c = u, g = t and q = p; the error was in the hand transcription, which had confused those letter shapes, and once the transcription was corrected the pairs fell into place. The opening of R4937 shows it: pmwxwh oncckdzwnw is czasar dipplomaia, “the Emperor's diploma”.
The alphabet was recovered on 23 Sept 2026 by simulated annealing against the shared Hungarian quadgram model, with no crib, on R4936. On 23 Oct 2026 R4936 was re-transcribed from the images (215 label changes) and R4937 and R4942 were transcribed in full; all three were decoded with the alphabet unchanged and aligned letter by letter with the figures. In R4937, 839 of 847 letters of the reading stand on the cipher letter's own value.
03 The letters that give sentences
R4937, 1646, to the Hofmeister
The letter opens in cipher and keeps clear words between the runs (in italics in the reading). From R4937_reading.md:
czasar dipplomaia serent semmit nem sem akar efectualni Cum satisfactione Evangelicorum; ... az clerus elbirta czasart ...
“According to the Emperor's diploma he wants to effect nothing at all cum satisfactione Evangelicorum ... The clergy has prevailed over the Emperor.” The writer urges Bethlen to keep the plan from the King of Poland and, if the Emperor's armies move, to hire four thousand good foot with their officers and dragoons, or at the least a thousand foot and five hundred dragoons. A run after megsegni in line 3 and the end of line 13 decode to letter strings that are not words.
R4940 and R4942, Zsigmond Rákóczi, 1648
R4940 is a clear letter from Munkács of 2 August 1648 with two cipher spans: votumiok and niert dolog volna, “if their votes were as Your Grace writes, it would be a won matter”. R4942's cipher block speaks of using the intermediaries and of the plenipotentiary power his brother has given him; its clear slip on image 3 carries the same text and confirms the decipherment.
04 R4939, a second cipher

R4939 is in a different simple substitution: 23 cipher letters, each standing for one plain letter, with ten reciprocal pairs (a–m, b–i, c–p, d–u, e–g, f–v, h–l, o–y, r–z, s–t). It was transcribed (1,631 letters) and broken from its own ciphertext by annealing on 23 Oct 2026; 50 look-alike labels were then corrected on 3× crops (R4939_key.md, R4939_corrections.tsv). An independent second reader transcribed six randomly drawn lines blind: 200 of 213 letters agree (93.9%), and three words of 36 are not carried by the blind decode. Under the project's one-key rule it should be a target of its own; it is described here until it is split.
The brothers write to Bethlen and Klobusiczky that their father is dying (az doctor itileti szerent is eletehez ... semmi ... ninc, “by the doctor's judgement there is no [hope] for his life”), that he did not want the Polish crown for himself, that seeking the principality for Zsigmond now would put the country in danger, and they bind the envoys to further oeczem uram promotioiat, “my younger brother's promotion”, with money to be spent on it. Lines 3–9 keep about twelve words that decode to non-words with every look-alike pair tried.
05 What remains open
- R4936 (1645, 1,956 letters). It decodes into numbered points on the Warsaw mission (three thousand musketeers and a thousand dragoons to be hired, money at Danzig, Bregy and Croissy), but 130 letters of the reading (6.7%) sit on the other member of a look-alike pair, mostly t written on g-shaped letters; at the scan's 1,704-pixel width the hand's g and q do not separate, and no contemporary or printed text settles the choice. Counted as decoded, not read; blocker: illegible (a sharper image of Keresdi Bethlen 14 would settle it).
- R4937: a run on line 3 and the end of line 13 (illegible at 2.2×).
- R4938: three spans of 54 letters decoded with the family key (az Rakoczi Sigmon, az nekunk [...] volna, mi [?nevunkre] forogion); one word, ailunkker, occurs once and is too short to settle. The clear letter around them is not transcribed.
- R4939: about twelve words in lines 3–9 (illegible on the scan).
- The family alphabet's statistical validation on R4940 alone is “too short” (23 letters); the checks that carry it are the R4942 clear slip, the alignments and the sense of the longer letters.
Measured on the transcriptions: R4937 869, R4942 252, R4940 23 and R4939 1,631 cipher letters are in letters that give sentences, 2,775 of 4,785 (0.58). The modern Hungarian word list cannot score 17th-century spelling (it gives 0.07 on printed letters of 1645), so the sentences were judged by reading; the explicit-hole share of the readings is 0.90–1.00. Measured word by word on 24 October 2026, R4937 builds coherent sentences but reads at 93.3% of its words, R4939 at 89.6% and R4940’s two spans at 88.7%, under the 95% a complete reading needs.

R4936, 1645 (provisional) decoded, not read
Numbered instructions in the prince's 'we' to Ferenc Bethlen at Warsaw, 1645, with clear Hungarian links: the King must be persuaded and the Respublica should not disgrace itself or bow to the Turk; the King is asked to hire 3,000 musketeers and 1,000 dragoons (at least 2,000 and 1,000) for Transylvania; money at Danzig; recruits to Munkacs and Makovica; news of Bregy and Croissy.
A mechanical decode with holes in most sentences: shown so that the transcription and the key can be checked and improved, not as a reading.

# R4936 in English (translation of R4936_reading.md; same holes) # Numbered points sent to Ferenc Bethlen during his Warsaw mission of 1645, in the prince's "we" (probably György I # Rákóczi). Words in italics are in clear in the letter. [?word] partly carried, [...] unread. 1. The King would have to be persuaded, considering the lifelong disgrace [it would be to him], and [that] he would give way in his purpose. 2. The Respublica too should not disgrace themselves: if they do not *want* to make war, they should *also* show firmness even alongside kings, strengthen their arms, and not throw the alliances [and] the neighbouring countries into danger; they should not let themselves be despised with the Turk, *for if* they send in an envoy, [it is] to their undying disgrace; here such things would make their good name *vain*, and their honour; they would show only fair words, [...] they will surely fall upon them. *There are enough* motives *about this in the* instruction, [?sound], weighty reasons. *Even so*, it would only come to what Your Grace understood at Gorlice: *that* all honour, future advantage, the dignity of kings, good repute and good name they want to count for nothing. In such a case, [?as] *we leave it so to Your Grace*, it is in the instruction to be carried out [...] about this; *Your Grace* would have to wish for it. *He indeed* [is] to bring it into effect with the King, *since* we too, as a country, are suspected for [?His] Majesty's sake; he should stand by us. *If only* this winter, if our greater need does not require it, His Majesty would set aside two thousand musketeers at his own cost, and *for us too*, for our pay, three thousand good musketeers and a thousand dragoons, not [...] from his troops, *so that* by that occasion we too could strengthen the peace of our country to the utmost. If he did not want to keep them, he should release those [?three] thousand musketeers *too*, [and] the thousand dragoons, to our pay; *and this* should also be solicited and obtained through the Prince; I believe, if needed, [they are] to be released directly to His Majesty; His Majesty's action in this will serve to strengthen our goodwill towards him. *At* the very least, if only two thousand musketeers and a thousand dragoons can be had. *Our money: at Danzig there are 4,000 florins, with Jacab 2,000 fl., with the Vim captain 1,000 fl.; we will give the Danzig money to whoever gives the money here in Warsaw.* *Your Grace must turn all* your reflection, ability and industry to this: since we stand with such great [?sincerity] towards the King and the Respublica, that we should not fall into danger on their account, *as if* they would leave us in it; and ever a Christian prince too, whenever they are needed, yet does not serve them. *[clear, unread: buevett igen]* Your Grace should keep away from and avoid [it]; let *Your Grace* hand in nothing in writing with which they could [?slander] us anywhere. *Those whom* they could hire must be brought out straight, some to Munkács, some to Makovica; *the* György Rákóczi promised two hundred [?dragoons]; *the* Prince too may perhaps give two hundred musketeers. If you meet Bregy face to face, *Your Grace should* inform [us] as soon as possible *of what* you can learn from him about Croissy and other matters [?about him]. They should give assurance also that, if more substantial help were needed, we would not be left short of it. *Your Grace* can simply say, where it is fitting: if they desert us and we have to be enemies at some time, they will have themselves to blame.
R4937, 1646 (partial extract) read in part
1646, to 'edes Hokmester' (Bethlen): the Emperor will effect nothing of the diploma for the Evangelicals; the clergy rules him; keep secret from the King why Transylvania would not join a war on the Turk; hire 4,000 foot with officers, or 2,000 armed men, or at least 1,000 foot and 500 dragoons.
Builds coherent sentences, but under the read bar of 95% of words read as sense (93% here); the holes are marked in the reading.

# R4937 in English (translation of R4937_reading.md; same holes) # Letter of 1646 to "dear Hofmeister" (Ferenc Bethlen), sender not named on the page. Words in italics are in clear. According to the Emperor's diploma he wants to effect nothing at all *cum satisfactione Evangelicorum*; faithlessly *they want* [?to break it] [...] [?is] *the affairs and* their state [?pretending], they give us to understand; *neither* to the constancy of *this* peace nor to the satisfaction [promised] in the diploma *should* we trust, *all* their *intentions, will, the sending away of their people* [are] all falsehood, *and* they want to trample the worship of our God [and] our freedom underfoot. The clergy has prevailed over the Emperor; *[clear:] mm, to act against us*. In view of which, dear *Hofmeister*, keeping this only secret, [?even if] the King *indeed* began to make war against the Turk [...] *let us act*; *Your Grace*, let us not be so obliged to the King *that we would have to be drawn away* from the service of our God and our country *too*. *This must* be kept secret from the King, *why* we must do it, *if facing* [them] His Majesty should move against the Turk, and we *against such* [?false] believers would have to go too; so we could serve His Majesty. God is our witness, we have been embittered by *these* falsehoods; if they begin to send the armies, we will compel them to their loyalty towards us. *Your Grace should not be slow in this; let him with all his forces* hire four thousand good foot with all their officers, [and] dragoons, *or if that* cannot be, two thousand good armed men, even if he made war on the King; *and if only* a thousand foot [and] five hundred dragoons, *or* let him bring armed men. [?...] the Prince's goodwill *and* help *Your Grace* should ask; I believe that so we serve them in the future too, *with them too*.
R4940, Rákóczi Zsigmond to Ferenc Bethlen, Munkács, 2 Aug 1648 read in part
A clear letter with two short cipher spans, read 'votumiok' (their votes) and 'niert dolog volna' (it would be a won matter) with the shared alphabet family.
Builds coherent sentences, but under the read bar of 95% of words read as sense (89% here); the holes are marked in the reading.

# R4940: two enciphered expressions Working reading, 23 September 2026. The complete letter has two short cipher spans on page 1; page 2 is the address and seal. Both images inspected. Sender: Rákóczi Zsigmond, signed. Recipient: Ferenc Bethlen, explicitly addressed on the verso. Date/place: Munkács, 2 August 1648 (in clear on page 1). | Cipher | Mechanical reading | Interpretation | |---|---|---| | adqgzndl | votumiok | their votes / opinions (Latin-derived Hungarian expression) | | inyhqodkduadkiv | niertdologvolna | nyert dolog volna: it would be a won/settled matter | The first expression follows “Ha ...”; the second follows the clear address to the recipient. The spelling `niert` is retained rather than silently modernized to `nyert`. The glyph distinction q/g was checked in `R4940-cipher.png`: q=t, g=u. This is supported by the broader alphabetic substitution family in R4937/R4942; it is not an independent ciphertext-only solution of these 23 letters. Used key assignments: a=v, d=o, g=u, h=r, i=n, k=l, l=k, n=i, o=d, q=t, u=g, v=a, y=e, z=m. The cancelled word before the first cipher span is not transcribed. It is a deletion, not counted as surviving ciphertext. The main goal remains in progress; this letter is not yet written up or assigned a final novelty claim.

# R4940, Zsigmond Rákóczi to Ferenc Bethlen, Munkács, 2 Aug 1648: reading of the whole letter Written 23 Oct 2026 (Claude Opus 5.5, translation wave v9). Until now the repository had only the two cipher spans (`R4940-reading.md`); the clear letter around them was not transcribed. It is transcribed here from the DECODE image `IMG_R4940_I28653_P1.jpg` (main checkout, `transylvania1645/`, git-ignored), read line by line on 1.5x crops. Clear text in plain type; the two cipher spans in *italics*, deciphered with the family alphabet (`R4940-reading.md`: adqgzndl = *votumiok*, inyhqodkduadkiv = *niert dolog volna*). The hand writes e as a raised dot and abbreviates *kegyelmednek* / *kegyelmed* (k.gyld.k, k.gyld); these are written out. Spelling otherwise as on the page, without added accents; punctuation as the page's commas and stops. A word struck through before the first cipher span is a deletion and is left out. Holes: `[?word]` a doubtful reading of the hand, `[…]` a word not read. ## Reading Szolgalok kegyelmednek, es Istentul kivanok minden jokat. György I Rákóczi is dying; he had not sought the Polish crown for himself; the sons will not risk Transylvania by seeking the principality for Zsigmond now and bind the envoys to promote Zsigmond's candidacy for the Polish crown, spending money on it; letters will follow at the father's death. A different simple substitution from the family key, recovered ciphertext-only.
Builds coherent sentences, but under the read bar of 95% of words read as sense (90% here); the holes are marked in the reading.

Translation
# R4939, 1648: English (23 Oct 2026, r2h) Translation of `R4939_reading.md`, same holes. "His Highness" = György I Rákóczi, the writers' father; "my younger brother" = Zsigmond Rákóczi. We would have wished to be able to write happier news from God to Your Lordships: on our gracious lord our father [?his health ...] God's great visitation is upon us; [?it has grown very much worse], so that by the doctor's judgement there is no [?further] [hope] for his life ... taking it to mind, His Highness ordered that Your Lordships should conduct yourselves ... knowing ... His Highness did not want the election for himself but meant it for us ... As for our own state, we certainly do not want it, for we do not want to throw this poor country ... into a more dangerous condition; Your Lordships know how things stand with the Porte. For good security ... may God preserve him ... after His Highness's death we must think, and not leave this country without a head [?in danger]. If we wanted to win the principality for my younger brother it would take a long time, and meanwhile ... the state would be in great danger, and [...] an uncertain matter. Therefore we bind Your Lordships, by the duty you owe to our gracious lord and father and after His Highness to us, to employ our grace with every means where it is needed in my younger brother's promotion; Your Lordships, being there, are to work on everyone, since His Lordship's fortune ... assuring those whom it concerns, and it must be known that as his father, who was ready to lay down his life for him, so we will strive to further him with all our means. May God preserve him; we will inform Your Lordships of His Highness's death too, if God has so ordained, which we do not wish to live to see. We will use our money so that by spending it ... it may be turned to his promotion. May God preserve him; if His Highness should happen to die, we will send letters, if needed, so that Your Lordships can deliver them to those whom it concerns, and further the business of my younger brother in the best way.
R4938, G. Rákóczi to Ferenc Bethlen, 24 Apr 1647 (three cipher spans in a clear letter) decoded, not read
Three short cipher spans (54 letters) in a clear letter, decoded with the family key unchanged: 'az Rakoczi Sigmon', 'az nekunk [...] volna', 'mi [?nevunkre] forogion'; a later pencil gloss agrees.
A mechanical decode with holes in most sentences: shown so that the transcription and the key can be checked and improved, not as a reading.
