- The letters
- Francesco de’ Cattanei to Gianfrancesco Gonzaga, lord of Mantua, Rome, 13 February 1430 (all in cipher) and 21 February 1430 (three cipher lines on the verso).
- Where
- Archivio di Stato di Mantova, Archivio Gonzaga. DECODE R1854, images 4 and 5; the record was catalogued as one letter of unknown sender.
- The cipher
- A homophonic substitution in graphic signs, with signs for et, con and -rum; the writer spells x as cx.
- How it was deciphered
- A solver on a Latin language model recovered the key from the ciphertext alone; a second pass checked every sign on the image and made 209 corrections.
- What it says
- Roman news: a lost galley at Gaeta, Castile and Aragon, the Rimini envoys, and the archbishop of Patras offering his see’s lordship to Venice.
- Still open
- About 32 signs in four short spots of the first letter, and several names spelled out but not identified.
These two letters are images 4 and 5 of DECODE R1854, which holds four letters to Gianfrancesco Gonzaga in four ciphers. The others have their own pages: a Gonzaga agent in Rome, 9 August 1428, an informant at Forlì, 6 November 1428 and Pandolfo Malatesta, 22 April 1428 (not solved). They were written up together until 14 October 2026.
01 Rome, February 1430: Francesco de’ Cattanei’s news
Cattanei’s letter of 13 February is wholly in cipher, a homophonic system with signs for et, con and -rum; he writes x as “cx” (dicxit, reducxit). It is a newsletter. The magnificent lord Carlo speaks of a marriage alliance with King Louis. A galley of Giovanni de Orlandis (a man named in the Rome letter of 1428) took a Catalan ship and was itself taken at Gaeta, a loss of five thousand ducats. The king of Castile presses Aragon. An envoy of the lords of Rimini left without obtaining anything. Then:
dominus a[rchi]episcopus de Patrasio cum licencia domini nostri dare volebat temporale dominium dominio Venetorum, et illud defenderet ab infidelibus. Dominus noster fecit proponere cardinalibus. Responderunt melius est perdere quam Venetis tradere, quia una vice recuperabitur; set si Veneti haberent, recuperare nunquam esset possibile.
The archbishop is Pandolfo Malatesta, the sender of the letter of April 1428 in the same record. Patrasio is the city’s name as the signs spell it, a Latin form of the Italian Patrasso: the two signs after Patras, read i and o with the key, are its ending, not a separate word (corrected 30 September 2026). Patras fell to the Palaiologoi in 1430. The rest of the letter concerns the chancellor of Niccolò da Tolentino, “creditur Nicolaus cito de Bertonorio debeat recedere” (Bertinoro; re-divided 5 October 2026), an abbot freed from excommunication, and six citizens of Bologna expected in Rome, “duos de maioribus, duos de mediocris, et duos de diminutivis”.
The three cipher lines on the verso of the second letter (21 February) report the Rimini envoys: “dominus Astorgius et dominus Bartolomeus anbasiatores dominorum de Arimino die lune comparuerunt coram comisariis et producxerunt mandatum et certas copias bullarum auctenticatas … credo parum iuvabit”, and in clear, “denarios non habeo pro expensis”. 02 Method
The transcriptions were made from the DECODE images, in crops at 4–13×; image 5 is photographed upside down. A homophonic annealer on the project’s shared Latin model gave Latin at once (post recessum, sollicitabo bullam, galeotam). A second transcription pass then checked every sign against the image with the key in hand and made 209 corrections, splitting look-alikes (a slanted and a rounded b, i and o; η and 9). The same key reads the verso. A test against chance and overfitting with a letter model (docs/_validate.py, on these two letters alone) passes.
03 What remains uncertain
- 1,704 of 1,736 signs read as sense (13 February 1,505 of 1,537; 21 February 199 of 199), re-counted 5 October 2026.
- Measured on the words of the readings (October 2026): the letter of 13 February (image 4) builds coherent sentences but reads at 90.6%, under the 95% bar; the verso lines of 21 February (image 5) read at 100%.
- “leonebi … re[∂]bs” (l. 4; the image shows e b, so Leonelli is not forced), “aisignata pure st” (l. 5), “uniei … cille” (l. 11), “a-mhi episcopus” (l. 14, expected archiepiscopus): about 32 signs on a 786-pixel scan.
- Names deciphered letter by letter but not identified: Trrusius(?), Berardelus, Bonifacius de Meana(?), Canedulum(?).

Image 4, Rome, 13 Feb 1430 read in part
Francesco de' Cattanei's news from Rome to Gianfrancesco Gonzaga: Carlo (Malatesta?) on a marriage alliance with King Louis (of Anjou); a galley of Giovanni de Orlandis took a Catalan ship and lost it at Gaeta (5,000 ducats); Castile presses Aragon; the archbishop of Patras offered the temporal lordship to the Venetians with the pope's licence, and the cardinals answered it was better lost than given to Venice.
Builds coherent sentences, but under the read bar of 95% of words read as sense (91% here); the holes are marked in the reading.

Reading
<!-- Reading of R1854 image 5 (Claude Opus 5.5, 23 Oct 2026): the three cipher lines of the verso, decoded with key4_v2.txt on the second-pass transcription p5v2.txt (lines 1-2 as in reading_p4.md; line 3 decoded here with the same key: "auctenticatas dicti comisarii admiserunt si et in quantum credo parum iuuabit", which NOTES.md quotes in part), then the clear close as p5v2.txt gives it (in ⟨ ⟩). Word division and punctuation editorial; spelling as the key gives it; "producxerū(n)t" (macron) written producxerunt. --> # R1854 image 5: Francesco de' Cattanei to Gianfrancesco Gonzaga, Rome, 21 February 1430 (verso) ## Reading Dominus Astorgius et dominus Bartolomeus anbasiatores dominorum de Arimino die lune comparuerunt coram comisariis, et producxerunt mandatum et certas copias bullarum auctenticatas. Translation
<!-- English translation of texts/R1854-P5_reading.md (Claude Opus 5.5, 23 Oct 2026). --> # R1854 image 5: Francesco de' Cattanei to Gianfrancesco Gonzaga, Rome, 21 February 1430 (verso): English translation Lord Astorgio and Lord Bartolomeo, ambassadors of the lords of Rimini, appeared on Monday before the commissaries and produced a mandate and certain authenticated copies of bulls. The said commissaries admitted them "if and in so far as" [i.e. with reservation]. I believe it will help little. ⟨I have no money for expenses. Rome, 21 February 1430.⟩
