The letter: László Vetési Kökényesdi, Rákóczi's agent abroad, signing as “Cassimirus Miloftzki”, to Ferenc Rákóczi II, dated 9 January 1706: clear Hungarian with numerical cipher runs.
Where: Ráday Archives, C64-4d2-10, ff. 92–95; DECODE R473 (three images), catalogued 1 Jan 1705–1706 with Pál Ráday as receiver.
The cipher: A one-part Hungarian syllabic nomenclator: letters and syllables in two- and three-figure groups, names and words in larger ones (276 Franciaország, 1190 Kegyelmes Uram), 9 and 8 as nulls.
How it was deciphered: A hand of the time glossed nearly every group. On 23 Oct 2026 the gloss was transcribed afresh and Rákóczi's key DECODE R446 was found by testing the neighbouring key records against 18 glossed groups (16 agree); applied to all 380 groups it agrees with the gloss at 253 of 304 where both give a value.
What it says: The post from France: Nice castle surrendered to the French king, Valencia in revolt, the coming war in Italy and Spain, Holland tiring of the war, and Vetési's anxious report on an order of Rákóczi's he never received.
Still open: About a dozen clear words in a faded part of ff. 93–94, read with doubt; the printed note in Ráday Pál iratai I (1955) not compared (not online). With the doubtful words as holes, the reading builds coherent sentences but reads at 90.6% of its words (measured 24 October 2026), under the 95% a complete reading needs.

01 The letter and its date

The letter opens “Méltóságos Fejedelem” (Most Illustrious Prince), part of it in cipher, calls the addressee Nagyságod (Your Highness) and Kegyelmes Uram, names “Rádai uram” in the third person and is signed Cassimirus Miloftzki, a cover name of László Vetési Kökényesdi. The addressee is therefore Rákóczi; DECODE's receiver, Pál Ráday, is the secretary in whose papers it survives. The closing reads Költ azon, Kilenczedik Januarii, the place in unglossed cipher, and the archive's endorsement at the head of f. 92 gives 1706 I. 9; DECODE's “1 Jan 1705–1706” is a placeholder.

A pencil note on f. 92 cites Ráday Pál iratai I (1703–1706), ed. Benda Kálmán and others (Budapest 1955), item 102, footnote 1, p. 494. The volume is not online, so whether it prints the letter has not been checked. The images of the Ráday Archives are not in the public domain and are not reproduced here.

02 The cipher and the key

A hand of the time wrote the plaintext over almost every cipher group: Francziaország, Olaszországban, Spaniolországban, Holandia és Anglia, Ráday uram. DECODE's transcription renders this gloss as garbled syllables (“Fejedehd”, “ttolendia”), and an attempt in September 2026 to rebuild the key from it by alignment gave a noisy table.

The key turned out to be in the same archive. The DOC files of the DECODE key records R380–R520 were scanned against 18 glossed groups of R473; only R446 (Ráday Archives C64-4d2-25 no. 6, Rákóczi's Hungarian key, original) fits, with 16 of 18, and no other record scores above 1. DECODE's transcription of R446 was then corrected on its image: 69 is al, 71–74 an, ar, as, at, the ö/ü groups are distinct, 35 is ly and 296 Belgium; the last column, headed x, holds the nulls 9 and 8. Applied to the 380 groups of the letter, the key and the gloss both give a value at 304, and agree at 253. The rest are spelling variants, misalignments of the gloss over long runs and a few writer's slips. Where the gloss is garbled the key gives the word: Niszevárat ... az Franciaországi király kezében adta, az király táborba, Belgiummal, hogy Herbaville ujjobban gyözidelmeskedet.

03 What the letter says

Tegnap előtt Franciaországbul érkezett posta ad okot Nagyságodnak alázatoson udvarlanom. [...] Kegyelmes Uram, Niszevárat az Franciaországi király kezében adta, mellyért örömet itten tegnap estve az öreg templomban solenniter [?celebraltak].

“The post that arrived from France the day before yesterday gives me occasion to pay my humble respects to Your Highness. [...] Most Gracious Lord, [it] gave the castle of Nice into the hands of the King of France, for which they [?celebrated] the rejoicing solemnly here yesterday evening in the old church.” Nice castle surrendered to the French on 4 January 1706. Vetési goes on to Spain, where the court is discontented, Valencia has rebelled and Aragon wavers, and the Queen will not take up the administration; the King of France must send money there. Next year's war, he expects, will be in Italy and Spain, with the Empire on the defensive; taking Antwerp would not suit Holland's trade with Belgium, and people say Holland, tired of the useless expense, will leave the House of Austria. He has heard that Herbeville has won a victory, and he reports anxiously that he never received an order of Rákóczi's of 30 November, of which Ráday's December letter says nothing.

04 What remains open

About a dozen clear words in the faded part of ff. 93–94, read with doubt and marked [?word] in the reading ([?esmiten], [?viretelu], [?mandilat] ...): blocker, illegible on the scans.

# R473: Vetési Kökényesdi ("Cassimirus Miloftzki") to Rákóczi, 9 January 1706, reading

Re-read 23 Oct 2026 (Claude Opus 5.5, REREAD_BRIEF batch b37); log in `R473_reread_log.md`. **The cipher rests on two
independent sources that agree:** the contemporary interlinear decipherment written over the figures, and **Rákóczi's
Hungarian syllabic key DECODE R446** (Ráday Archives C64-4d2-25 no. 6), found in the same archive's key series by a scan
of the neighbouring DECODE key records and checked on its image (`R473_decode_R446.txt`, `R473_key_vs_gloss.tsv`,
`research/reading_audit/b37_vetesi_dec.py`). The clear text is read on the original; both were transcribed afresh from
the three DECODE images (`R473_transcription.txt`). *Ráday Pál iratai* I (1955), cited in pencil on f. 92 (item 102,
n. 1, p. 494), is not online and was not used.

Conventions: plain = clear on the page, or carried by the key and the gloss together; `[?word]` = a clear word read with
doubt, or a cipher word where key and gloss part and neither makes the word alone; `[…]` = illegible; `[word]` supplied.
Groups the key does not list (9 and 8 head its null column; 6, 7, 1000, 512, 750 ... are outside the table) are nulls
and are left out; the glossator wrote nothing over them. Spelling as written, the cipher in the key's and glossator's
spelling; *Ngd.* expanded to *Nagyságod*, *Kegs* to *Kegyelmes*, *aláz.* to *alázatos*, *orsz.* to *ország*.

Olaszországban az dolgok jól [?folyó], Spaniolországban pedig nem [?esmiten] lévén, [?eszerint] az udvarnak nyilván való, Kegyelmes Uram, hogy azon udvarnálok az malekontentus lött, noha [?szövetségét] is, sok költséget is teszi az király táborba való menés.

[?er] Mindazonáltal az nagyjai az idevalók kételkednek iránta, Valentia is rebillat, Arragonia is közelget habozni.

- **Key R446** (DECODE, "key, original", Ráday Archives C64-4d2-25 no. 6, Hungarian syllabary 11-370 with a nomenclator
  and 00, 1190, 2670, 6670 for the titles). A scan of the DOC files of DECODE R380-R520 against 18 glossed groups of
  R473 found it: 16 of 18 agree (`b37_keyscan.py`); no other key scored above 1. On the whole letter the key and the
  gloss agree at 253 of the 304 groups where both give a value; the rest are (a) spelling variants (*Hollandia* /
  gloss *Holandia*, *vö* / *vő*, *kogy* = *hogy*), (b) DECODE misreadings of the key corrected on its image (296 *Belgium*, DECODE "Belgin"; 69 *al*,
  71 *an*, 72 *ar*, 73 *as*, 74 *at*; 80/32/58 *ö*, 70/33/59 *ü*; 35 *ly*), (c) the glossator's slips (175 *ni*, read
  *mi*/*m* by him or by me; 123 *go*), and (d) four places where the writer's figure does not give the gloss's
  syllable: 78 (*Ba* for *az*, twice: the reading follows the gloss), 150 (*P* for *le* in *malekontentus*), 97
  (*eg* for *ab*: [?abban]), 83/48 in the subscription.

  (6670, 263, 170.300.40.210.160, 1190); *Niszevárat* (175 *ni*: the citadel of Nice, surrendered to Louis XIV's

Most Illustrious Prince, my great good and Most Gracious Lord!

The post that arrived from France the day before yesterday gives me occasion to pay my humble respects to Your Highness.

[…] Most Gracious Lord, [it] gave the castle of Nice into the hands of the King of France, for which they [?celebrated] the rejoicing solemnly here yesterday evening in the old church.

In Italy affairs are [?going] well; but in Spain, things not being [?…], it is [?accordingly] plain to the court, Most Gracious Lord, that the courtiers at that court have become malcontent, although the king's going to the camp also [?…] and costs a great deal.

Nevertheless the great men here have doubts about it; Valencia too has rebelled, Aragon too is coming close to wavering.

For which reason the Queen has by no means taken up the administration, but [?wants] to go to the camp; and there is no money, Most Gracious Lord, nor is any [?ready].

Above all the King of France must send money to Spain.

It seems, Most Gracious Lord, that next year the war will be wholly in Italy and Spain; here and in the Empire they will [?be] on the defensive, although Holland and England are preparing hard, and against Antwerp [?in Flanders].
