- The letters
- Ludwik Wąsowicz, stolnik of Łomża, to Aleksander Michał Lubomirski (1614–1677), Grand Master of the Horse of the Crown: seven letters from 29 November 1662 to 9 December 1663, the last written at Jarosław. Clear Polish with names and whole sentences in numbers.

- Archiwum Narodowe w Krakowie, Archiwum Krzeszowickie Potockich (fonds 29/639), AKPot 3227: DECODE R7503–R7510 for the letters, R7501 (p. 81) for the table. Catalogue entry 439, now removed.
- The cipher
- A simple substitution: one two-digit number for each letter, 25 values, no homophones, no nulls, no code words. The numbers run together inside the clear sentence.
- How it was deciphered
- With the table on R7501, a nineteenth-century reconstruction headed “Klucz Wąsowicza (i Kotowicza) do Alex. Lubomirskiego”, applied unchanged. Brice Dudout checked it blind on the letter of 5 May 1663: 0.389 of the decoded words are in a Polish lexicon, against a 99th percentile of 0.083 for 1,000 permuted tables and 1,000 shuffled texts.
- What it says
- The confederated army in its circle at Wolbórz waiting for its pay, a court that “strives to keep the agreement with the army”, and the Marshal, Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski, the recipient’s brother, watched two years before his rebellion. In December 1663 he will not join the King’s Ukrainian campaign: iam ani hetman ani żołnierz do wiosny.
- Still open
- One word of 19 March 1663 (‹przezęidą›, two digits uncertain) and the end of the next; doubtful digits in the letter of 5 May 1663, settled by sense; several people named in clear (Born, Argent, Paczanowski, Paprocki, Woieński, Tekieli) not identified.

01 The letters
Volume AKPot 3227 of the Potocki archive from Krzeszowice holds letters to Aleksander Michał Lubomirski, Grand Master of the Horse (koniuszy) of the Crown and later Voivode of Cracow (1668). Among them are nine records of letters of Ludwik Wąsowicz, stolnik of Łomża (the archive’s inventory and his signatures give the office), R7502–R7510, a sheet with the decipherment of one of them (R7511) and the cipher table (R7501). Wąsowicz writes in clear Polish and puts names and the sentences that matter into numbers. A Ludwik Wąsowicz of the Łabędź arms, stolnik of Łomża in 1669 and burgrave of Cracow in 1664–1665, is listed among the officials of the Cracow voivodeship (Cynarski and Falniowska-Gradowska, 1990, as cited by the Polish Wikipedia); he is probably the same man.

The numbers are counted here from the transcriptions, page labels and separators left out. R7510 has no form of address and ends “W Jarosławiu d. 9 decembr. 1663”, a date also pencilled at the head of R7509: the two records are most likely two parts of one letter, of 1663, not 1665. The remaining letter of the file, R7502 (about September 1662), already carries its decipherment between the lines and on a nineteenth-century sheet (R7511), and is not repeated here. DECODE dates every record of the file 21 October 1662, a placeholder. The same volume also holds a 1669 letter of Michał Kazimierz Radziwiłł with cipher passages (catalogue entry 440), not dealt with here.
No image of the file is reproduced on this page: the DECODE images are restricted.
02 The table
R7501 is a sheet of ruled nineteenth-century paper headed “Klucz Wąsowicza (i Kotowicza) do Alex. Lubomirskiego”: a grid from 1 to 100 in which only the values used are filled in. It is a reconstruction, not the key of the time, probably made when the papers passed through the hands of Józef Łepkowski and Franciszek Kluczycki at Krzeszowice; the heading also names a Kotowicz, probably another correspondent who used the same cipher. Its 25 values (key.tsv):
| 12 ę | 13 z | 21 g | 22 b | 23 k | 25 e | 28 t | 30 l | 33 d |
| 34 m | 35 r | 38 p | 40 ł | 41 c | 52 n | 53 a | 63 f | 68 ą |
| 69 y | 70 o | 72 w | 88 h | 90 i | 92 u | 96 s |
One number stands for one letter, with no homophones, nulls or code words; ż and ź are written with the number for z, ć with that for c, ń with that for n, and i also serves for j. Brice Dudout checked the table first on R7502, the one letter already deciphered between the lines, then applied it unchanged to the others, where correct Polish comes out at once: zgodę z woyskiem dwor dotrzymawac usiłuie.
03 What the letters say
In 1661–1663 the Crown army, unpaid, had formed a military confederation (the związek), whose general assembly, the circle of Wolbórz, met from December 1662 into the spring of 1663 to negotiate the arrears. The court of John II Casimir and Louise Marie suspected the Grand Marshal of the Crown, Jerzy Sebastian Lubomirski (1616–1667), the recipient’s younger brother, of backing the confederates and of opposing the election of a successor in the King’s lifetime. Condemned by the Sejm court at the end of 1664, he led the open rebellion of 1665–1666. Wąsowicz’s letters watch him from his own brother’s circle. In these letters krolestwo means the royal couple, “Their Majesties”.
- 29 November 1662. Only two words are in cipher: woiewoda ruski, the Voivode of Ruthenia, Stefan Czarniecki, who stayed loyal to the court (the writer put 69 for 96 in ruski).
- Winter 1662–1663, undated. The Marshal leaves “for Wolbórz, for the circle”. The rest concerns an estate, Błażejowa, held in pledge for three hundred thousand by a Tekieli who could not buy it for want of indigenate, the naturalisation into the Polish nobility; every name is in cipher.
- 25 January 1663. widziec obroty iakie miał marszałek (to see the manoeuvres the Marshal has made); zgodę z woyskiem dwor dotrzymawac usiłuie (the court strives to keep the agreement with the army); the whole point is aby pieniądze zwieziono, that the money be brought in.
- 17–18 February 1663. The Marshal is rather well received by Their Majesties and has satisfaction at the audiences; someone was ordered to negotiate nothing more, only to serve the King after the confederation and to watch iesli woysko czego złego nie mysli oyczyznie, whether the army is plotting harm to the fatherland.
- 19 March 1663. The Marshal has sent Tatar prisoners (probably) and so obliged Their Majesties; he does not promise to detach the better banners from the confederation before the circle, but after it assures that many will leave it; the Voivode of Ruthenia will not set out again.
- 5 May 1663. Marszał{ek} ze teraz siedzi w Łancucie nie odzywaiąc się dworowi: the Marshal stays at Łańcut without a word to the court, and opinions about him differ. When the King moves with the camp from near Cracow, the idea is to watch whether the Marshal detaches the banners from the confederation as he promised, and whether he comes with them to the King.
- 9 December 1663. The Archdeacon of Sandomierz has not asked after the recipient’s health; the continuation is below.
04 Jarosław, 9 December 1663
The longest letter, written at Jarosław after the funeral of the “podczaszy”, most likely Konstanty Jacek Lubomirski, Cupbearer of the Crown, the recipient’s brother, who died childless in 1663 and owned Jarosław (an identification still to be confirmed). On p. 246, with the cipher in italics in the established text:
JMP Marszałek we czwartek na noc odiechał stąd do Przeworska, z kąd wczora po obiedzie iechał do Łańcuta. Nie idzie w Ukrainę y tak mowi: iam a{n}i hetman ani żołnierz do wiosny. Ma iechać do Ianowca, ale wprzod uczyni konferencyą z Woienskiem […] w Łańcucie.
His Grace the Marshal left here on Thursday at night for Przeworsk, whence yesterday after dinner he went to Łańcut. He is not going to Ukraine, and says thus: “I am neither hetman nor soldier until the spring.” He is to go to Janowiec, but first he will hold a conference with Woieński […] at Łańcut.
The rest of the letter, in cipher where it matters: Born took it ill that there was no letter for him from the recipient, and would not say a word to Wąsowicz when he called on him; Born’s people say there is no concord in the army and nothing good will be done without him; the deputies of the army are being paid in szelągi, the debased copper coin, and the army must hold its circle in secret. Born is already taking Połonne and has summoned its burghers to Łańcut. The Cupbearer’s death is put down to an unheard-of fatness that caught fire from a great dance, for he had fallen in love with a German woman at Danzig, and to an internal stone. A postscript after the date line says that Born was to visit Argent, but Paczanowski spoke of a change.
05 How it was checked
- The table. R7501 was transcribed and checked on the one letter already deciphered (R7502, with its interlinear clear text and the sheet R7511).
- Applied unchanged to the seven unglossed letters: every cipher passage gives Polish.
- Blind check on the letter of 5 May 1663, held out. The protocol was written before computing; the numbers were transcribed by shape and frozen (SHA-256) before any decoding, then measured with a Polish lexicon: 0.389 of the words found, against a 99th percentile of 0.083 for 1,000 permuted tables and 1,000 shuffled texts.
- Doubtful numbers were settled by sense only, and marked. After the measurement, errors in the frozen transcription were identified without touching the file: a flat-topped 3 read as 5 (cho{d}ził, {około}), 35 for 38 ({p}ilniey), “21 [3]” for 25 23 (Marszał{ek}).
Numbers outside the table are the writer’s slips or overwritings, not code: 69 for 96 (ru‹y›ki, reversed digits), 13 for 53 (‹z›udiencyach), 36 for 63 (kon‹36›idencyą, reversed), 92 for 52 twice ({n}ie kazano, a{n}i), 33 for 22 (‹d›ytności for bytności), and 93, an overwritten 13. Across the eight transcriptions, 1,561 of 1,587 numbers (98.4%) are transcribed without doubt and have a value in the table; the other 26 are doubtful digits, mostly in the frozen transcription of 5 May 1663, or slips, each resolved by sense in the reading. Read as sentences against the translation, every letter’s cipher passages build Polish with the clear text around them; the established texts give the clear text only where it is needed for the sense.
No earlier decipherment was found: DECODE gives the records no status, key file or decryption, and a web search on 27 October 2026 found none.
06 What remains uncertain
- 19 March 1663: ‹przezęidą› gives no word as it stands, with two digits uncertain; the sense expected is przeydą (will pass over), not proven (M). The end of komendyrowani‹e› lies outside the line crop used. z z{a}wiązku (from the confederation) is the likeliest reading of a badly formed group; z związku remains possible (M).
- 5 May 1663: the readings in braces correct digits misread in the frozen transcription (C, forced by the sentence); {iak}‹ł›: 90 53 23 gives iak, and the following 40 (ł) is the writer’s addition.
- 9 December 1663: numbers lost in the tear of the right edge or cut off at the line end are restored in square brackets (upo[do]bał, list[u], teraźnie[y]szych) (I).
- People. Born (with “the Bornowscy”, his people), Argent, Paczanowski, Paprocki and Woieński are not identified, nor Bieykowski and “the father” of February 1663, nor the Starost of Spisz meant here. Tekieli may be of the Hungarian Thököly family (not verified). The Cupbearer’s identification is probable.
- Dates and places. The undated letter is placed between December 1662 and early 1663 by its opening (the Marshal leaving for the Wolbórz circle); the archivist’s pencil gives 1663. The established texts do not say where Wąsowicz wrote the first six letters; he writes from the court (tu w Cancellaryach, here in the chancelleries).

End of the Jarosław letter of 9 December 1663, after the funeral of the Cupbearer (probably Konstanty Jacek Lubomirski): Born's grievances and his taking of Połonne; the Marshal refuses the King's Ukrainian campaign ('iam ani hetman ani żołnierz do wiosny'); the army's deputies paid in debased szelągi; gossip about the Cupbearer's death.

# Wąsowicz to Lubomirski, 9 December 1663, continued (Jarosław) (ANK AKPot 3227, pp. 245–248; DECODE R7510): English translation p. 245: […] Born took it ill that there was [no letter for him from Your Grace]; he said that at the same time [Paprocki] to him… It is a misfortune [in our house] that we have [no correspondence with one another]; at least now [it was proper to write], that I should do it [in his name]. I answered: [the letter, that it was not given] […], but that Your Grace should have no single understanding with Born [in the present affairs]: I am instructed […] to Born. p. 246: I then exposed myself to Born, being [at his place, in his room; he would not say a single word to me], although I myself gave occasion, hinting at [the outstanding debts]. His Grace the Marshal left here on Thursday at night for Przeworsk, whence yesterday after dinner he went to Łańcut. [He is not going to Ukraine] and says thus: [“I am neither hetman nor soldier until the spring.” He is to go to Janowiec, but first he will hold a conference with Woieński] […] [at Łańcut]. Born’s people give out here [that there is no concord in the army], and consequently [nothing good will be done without his presence]. […] they told me [that they have quietly sent to the army to let it know that they should think of themselves, for here the deputies are paid in szelągi], and meanwhile it is forbidden [to take them]. These are deputies too, and they hinted [that the army must hold a circle in secret]. […] p. 247: […] His Grace the Archdeacon has not written to Your Grace now, because the very day after the funeral he left for Sandomierz, but he promised to write from home. [He had a conversation with Born], but would not reveal it to me, only that Born [complained of Your Grace, that you wish to advance by his ruin]. Born [is already taking Połonne away, and they will hardly obey the lady], for he has summoned [the burghers of Połonne to him at Łańcut]. […] The death of His Grace the Cupbearer is put down to an unheard-of fatness, which is said to have caught fire from a great dance, for he [had taken a fancy to a German woman at Danzig and fallen in love]; and it is added that he had [an internal stone], about which there are all kinds of tales [among the women]. […] P.S. (p. 248, after “At Jarosław, 9 December 1663”): It looked as though Born [was to be now] at Argent’s, as [the Starost of Spisz] hinted to me, but yesterday [Paczanowski] spoke of a change; I shall know more from him [when passing through Łańcut].
