TASK: take a partial decipherment further: Matignon’s Cipher-3, 1586
This page: https://dbourdeau.github.io/cyphersolver/further/matignon1586c3.html
You are helping a public research project finish reading historical cipher letters. This one is read in part:
the key works, but some pieces are still open. Your job is to close one or more of the open gaps below.
THE READING
Write-up: https://dbourdeau.github.io/cyphersolver/matignon1586c3.html (read it first: how the text was read, the key, the reading)
Date: 1586
Outcome: known key applied · partial
Read now: 30.5% of the deciphered cipher tokens give sense (pieces below may be untouched)

OPEN GAPS (from NOTES.md, "## Remaining gaps")
1. [no-key-material: needs a new source] fr. 15573 ff. 379-381: five rare code signs (circle on a cross, looped epsilon with a stroke, zigzag-tailed 3, m with a z-like tail, the barred double o where it is not *le roy de Navarre*) - blocker: no-key-material; one to three occurrences each, in none of the deciphered Cipher-3 letters Burford checked (ff. 189-190, 277-280, 282, fr. 15573 f. 373, fr. 15570 ff. 271-273)
2. [no-key-material: needs a new source] fr. 15573 ff. 379-381: about 300 signs outside sense runs, of which 5 short runs of clear signs not read - blocker: no-key-material; mostly names, period spellings and reader errors (0.93-0.96 per sign on known text); his list explains 110 of 115 items; no sign-by-sign human check yet
3. [no-key-material: needs a new source] f. 276 L18 'K' and L14 'C with o inside', one-sign code words not in Tomokiyo's table - blocker: no-key-material; each occurs once and neither recurs on these two leaves; the deciphered Cipher-3 siblings f. 189/190, f. 282 and fr. 15570 ff. 271-273 have not been searched for them
4. [no-key-material: needs a new source] f. 179 L13, the omega-with-overbar code sign (a person, Navarre?) - blocker: no-key-material; one occurrence, Tomokiyo's 680-px magenta does not settle it
5. [illegible: needs a new source] blots: f. 276 L04 after "de lui", f. 179 L18 after "en" - blocker: illegible; ink blots, checked on the Gallica natives
6. [illegible: needs a new source] f. 276 L22 closing and f. 179 L20 "de la D[…]use", a struck sign and a few short spans - blocker: illegible; faint or struck signs at the edge of the slip; the other unread signs are words the period lexicon holds fewer than 20 times (prieure, escriuent)
7. [no-key-material: needs a new source] fr. 15573 ff. 379-381: read 23 Oct 2026 (r2j, 0.59 explicit holes); about 45 doubtful words where the signs are clear but give no word under the key (Bourdeaulx, nouuelle, come, faict, reuenu, semble, propos, pourroit, seroit, Brulart, fortifications, recherche, consuls, supplie, consequence, Castelnau, Bearnais) - blocker: no-key-material; every break re-read on the full-size views 740-745 (r2j log); the values they need are in no deciphered Cipher-3 letter; Monaco J 41 (Matignon's minutes) not screened
8. [illegible: needs a new source] fr. 15573 ff. 379-381: blotted or bled-through spans (f. 380r ll. 2, 6-9, 18; f. 381r ll. 5, 8, 12, 19) - blocker: illegible; checked on the full-size views 740-745
ALREADY TRIED (from NOTES.md, "## Escalation")
[x] siblings: ff. 277r-278r with their decipherment ff. 279-280 used to check and extend the key; fr. 15570 ff. 271-273 (1585, deciphered on f. 273) gave six more values, and ff. 189-190, 282 and fr. 15573 f. 373 were read for the unknown signs (Burford, #44); f. 189/190, f. 282 and fr. 15570 ff. 271-273 not yet searched for the three code signs (named in the gaps)
[x] clear-pages: ff. 279-280 are the clear decipherment of ff. 277-278; Tomokiyo's magenta interlinear used for f. 179
[x] known-keys: Tomokiyo's partial Cipher-3 table applied; the Mayenne-Forget Cipher-1 key is a different cipher
[x] print: no printed decipherment of any leaf; Tomokiyo's openings of f. 276 and fr. 15573 f. 379r match; Burford searched GitHub, Tomokiyo's pages, Cryptoole and the web (PRIOR-ART.md); Monaco Palace archives J 41 (Matignon's minutes) not screened
[x] key-rebuild: ### = et, the split columns, the C-family signs and the other additions found on the leaves (f276/SOLUTION.md)
[x] retry: ff. 379-381 five voted passes and image rounds (Burford v0.2-v0.5); two independent reads of each slip, then a second (f. 276) and third (f. 179) image pass on every disagreeing span
[x] retry: (23 Oct 2026): ff. 379-381 decode divided, punctuated, translated with departures bracketed; f. 379r ll. 1-3 compared on the full-size image
[x] clear-pages: (23 Oct 2026, r2j): fr. 15573 views 724-757 searched for a clear copy, minute or decipherment of ff. 379-381: none
[x] retry: (23 Oct 2026, r2j): every break re-read on the full-size views 740-745; one label corrected; recurring second values and look-alike alternates (1.2% of letters); word-by-word carry check; 0.344 -> 0.590 explicit holes, read (B)
STEPS
0. Set up. If you can run a shell, fork and clone the repository and work inside it:
git clone https://github.com/dbourdeau/cyphersolver.git
Then read, in this order: CONTRIBUTING.md (how a contribution is sent and credited); README.md, sections
"Repository layout" and "Conventions" (how readings are measured and named); targets/matignon1586c3/NOTES.md in full, and the
key, transcription and reading files it names; lang/README.md (shared language models).
Work in targets/matignon1586c3/. Add your findings to NOTES.md under a dated heading without rewriting what is there, and
update the "## Remaining gaps" line of every gap you close. Keep WORKLOG.md there: one dated line per step
(hypothesis, value tried, solver run, crib, control), failures included. Do not edit docs/ (the site is generated).
If you cannot run a shell, fetch the files from the links above and keep your work in files you send with the issue.
1. Pick a gap. Start with the ones marked "doable now" (open-codes, not-attempted, left-open): the images and the key
are online, so they need only work. A gap marked "needs a new source" (no-key-material, too-short, illegible,
needs-physical-access) can be closed only by something new: a key
or a deciphered sibling found elsewhere, a better image, a printed edition or calendar, a photograph from the archive.
For those, search for that material first, and say where you looked even when you find nothing.
2. Start from the existing key and transcription in the folder. Do not rebuild the key from scratch, and do not
re-read parts that are already read unless you find an error in them.
3. For a code group or sign value: list every place the group occurs, show how each reads with the value you propose,
and say what still does not fit. For a passage: re-read it at the image and give the folio and line. For a missing
letter or leaf: say where it is held and how it can be reached.
4. Measure again. Apply the key to the whole text, write the reading file, and count the share of cipher tokens that
give sense (not an estimate). The reading is "complete" only when (1) at least 95% of its cipher tokens give sense;
(2) no gap is left untried; (3) every letter in it is covered; (4) what stays open is scattered code groups or names,
or pieces blocked from outside. Otherwise it stays "partial": say which gaps are still open and why.
5. Be honest. Mark every uncertain word with [?], leave unread groups as their numbers or signs, and never fill a gap
with a plausible guess. A gap retried and still open, with what was ruled out, is worth reporting.
REPORT BACK
With a clone: open a pull request with your changes to targets/matignon1586c3/. Say in the description which gaps you worked on,
the share read before and after, and how you want to be credited (name, initials or handle, and a link).
Without one: open an issue: https://github.com/dbourdeau/cyphersolver/issues/new?template=further-reading.yml&title=Further+reading%3A+matignon1586c3&page=matignon1586c3.html
Give the write-up, the gap you worked on (its line in Remaining gaps, or the code group, folio and line), what you
propose, the evidence (every occurrence, the images or sources), the share read before and after, your step log,
and the tools and AI model you used.
If you cannot open issues or pull requests, write this report for your human to send. Credit goes to the person who sends it.Open gaps
