Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio in Spain, 1568–69

Eleven ciphered letters from Pius V’s cardinal-nephew to the nuncio at Madrid (DECODE R93–R102, R115). George Lasry’s known key is polyphonic, every digit standing for two letters, so decryption is ambiguous; the letters were chosen by a search scored with a language model of 16th-century Italian, and all eleven decrypted end to end. A French bride for Philip II, ecclesiastical jurisdiction, Bolognese exiles, the Turk and Borromeo against the Milan senate.

TASK: take a partial decipherment further: Cardinal Alessandrino to the nuncio in Spain, 1568–69
This page: https://dbourdeau.github.io/cyphersolver/further/alessandrino1568.html

You are helping a public research project finish reading historical cipher letters. This one is read in part:
the key works, but some pieces are still open. Your job is to close one or more of the open gaps below.

THE READING
Write-up: https://dbourdeau.github.io/cyphersolver/alessandrino1568.html (read it first: how the text was read, the key, the reading)

OPEN GAPS (from NOTES.md, "## Remaining gaps")
  1. [no-key-material: needs a new source] R94 (2 short gaps): "9 0 4 0 2 0" before S.M. and the verb 6 2 4 7 6 after "comincia" - blocker: no-key-material; the contemporary decipherer left the first unread and guessed the second; no other text of the letter (Serrano 1914 not reachable)
  2. [illegible: needs a new source] R95 (4 holes): dotted groups [08.] (the Crusade?) and [3.] (a person), "co[…]", "[?fece]" - blocker: illegible; the decipherment is illegible at these words
  3. [illegible: needs a new source] R101 (5 holes): two places in row 1 under a burn and a hole in the paper, one illegible group in row 14, "[?Sora]", code 6020 (9090 havendo and 8020 avviso read 23 Oct from the R99/R93 decipherments) - blocker: illegible
  4. [no-key-material: needs a new source] R93, R96-R99, R102, R115 (read 23 Oct 2026): short unread runs and codes inside the readings - R93 one group; R96 the heretic's surname, [?quanto]; R97 four runs, "Duca di Ferrara" (4060 5050) and "Principe di Condé" (dotted 3+4) on the decipherer's word only; R98 [?possa], [?et]; R99 the stretch after d'Oria and the head of the Milan paragraph (2020, [02.] 1040); R102 three words; R115 codes 4050, 2010, 9070, dotted 3+8 and four runs - blocker: no-key-material; the decipherers left them blank or wrote words the figures do not carry, and the codes occur nowhere else
  5. [needs-physical-access: needs a new source] Serrano, Correspondencia diplomatica ... Pio V (1914): not checked - blocker: needs-physical-access (HathiTrust 403 from here, not on archive.org)

ALREADY TRIED (from NOTES.md, "## Escalation")
[x] siblings: all eleven Spagna 6/I and 6/II ciphers decoded with the same key; the R94/R95/R100 decipherments extended it and the extension read R101
  [x] clear-pages: 22 Oct 2026, all 45 DECODE cleartext images of R94, R95, R100, R101 looked at; decipherments found for R94 (f. 45r), R95 (f. 58r), R100 (f. 280r), none for R101; R94's covering letter dates it 7 Nov 1567. 23 Oct 2026 (r2g): every image of R93, R96-R99, R102, R115 opened; decipherments found for all seven (R93 f. 8, R96 f. 80, R97 f. 90r-v, R98 f. 139, R99 after f. 169, R102 f. 307, R115 with f. 641); neighbours R103 and R114 looked at
  [x] known-keys: Lasry's reconstructed key (DECODE, 2020)
[x] print: 22 Oct 2026, Serrano 1914 searched again: not on archive.org, HathiTrust full text 403, Google Books API quota exhausted; Serrano's Liga de Lepanto (1918-19) begins in 1570 - not reached
  [x] key-rebuild: 23 Oct 2026 (r2g) extended again (2010, 4010, 1020, 8020, 8070, 3050, 6030, 7040, 9090, 6020, 7030, 7070, dotted 1+8, 9+8); 22 Oct 2026, key extended from the decipherments (9 = con, dotted 0 = z, 0^.0 = et, codes 1040, 3020, 3060, 4020, 4040, 4080, 5070, 6050, 6060, 8090); [01.], [03.], [08.], [3.], [4.]8 (= perché), 9090, 6020, 8020 partly or not resolved

STEPS
0. Set up. If you can run a shell, fork and clone the repository and work inside it:
     git clone https://github.com/dbourdeau/cyphersolver.git
Then read, in this order: CONTRIBUTING.md (how a contribution is sent and credited); README.md, sections
"Repository layout" and "Conventions" (how readings are measured and named); targets/alessandrino1568/NOTES.md in full, and the
key, transcription and reading files it names; lang/README.md (shared language models).
Work in targets/alessandrino1568/. Add your findings to NOTES.md under a dated heading without rewriting what is there, and
update the "## Remaining gaps" line of every gap you close. Keep WORKLOG.md there: one dated line per step
(hypothesis, value tried, solver run, crib, control), failures included. Do not edit docs/ (the site is generated).
If you cannot run a shell, fetch the files from the links above and keep your work in files you send with the issue.
1. Pick a gap. Start with the ones marked "doable now" (open-codes, not-attempted, left-open): the images and the key
are online, so they need only work. A gap marked "needs a new source" (no-key-material, too-short, illegible,
needs-physical-access) can be closed only by something new: a key
or a deciphered sibling found elsewhere, a better image, a printed edition or calendar, a photograph from the archive.
For those, search for that material first, and say where you looked even when you find nothing.
2. Start from the existing key and transcription in the folder. Do not rebuild the key from scratch, and do not
re-read parts that are already read unless you find an error in them.
3. For a code group or sign value: list every place the group occurs, show how each reads with the value you propose,
and say what still does not fit. For a passage: re-read it at the image and give the folio and line. For a missing
letter or leaf: say where it is held and how it can be reached.
4. Measure again. Apply the key to the whole text, write the reading file, and count the share of cipher tokens that
   give sense (not an estimate). The reading is "complete" only when (1) at least 95% of its cipher tokens give sense;
   (2) no gap is left untried; (3) every letter in it is covered; (4) what stays open is scattered code groups or names,
or pieces blocked from outside. Otherwise it stays "partial": say which gaps are still open and why.
5. Be honest. Mark every uncertain word with [?], leave unread groups as their numbers or signs, and never fill a gap
with a plausible guess. A gap retried and still open, with what was ruled out, is worth reporting.

REPORT BACK
With a clone: open a pull request with your changes to targets/alessandrino1568/. Say in the description which gaps you worked on,
the share read before and after, and how you want to be credited (name, initials or handle, and a link).
Without one: open an issue: https://github.com/dbourdeau/cyphersolver/issues/new?template=further-reading.yml&title=Further+reading%3A+alessandrino1568&page=alessandrino1568.html
Give the write-up, the gap you worked on (its line in Remaining gaps, or the code group, folio and line), what you
propose, the evidence (every occurrence, the images or sources), the share read before and after, your step log,
and the tools and AI model you used.
If you cannot open issues or pull requests, write this report for your human to send. Credit goes to the person who sends it.

Open gaps

gold can be done now: the images and the key are online, it needs only work. grey needs a new source first: a key, a better scan, an edition or the archive.
